Why You Need to Hydrate MORE in Humid Heat

Make sure you stay hydrated!

Hey y’all!  I was recently asked a question about hydration that I wanted to address.

Why do we need to stay hydrated when it’s humid out?

I can understand where the question comes from, and it’s one I get a lot. There’s more moisture in the air when it’s humid, and most people assume that you don’t need to drink as much because the air is moist. But that’s not the reality.

But that’s not the reality.

The reality is – the more humid it is, the hotter your body becomes, and the more you sweat and lose fluids. Your sweat doesn’t evaporate into the air with humid heat, so your body stays at a higher temperature. This causes you to sweat even more to try and cool it off.

Of course, for any kind of heat, you’ll be sweating, so you need to be drinking more water to stay hydrated.

How much water should you drink?

Aim for half your body weight in ounces. So for a 150 lb woman, she’d aim for drinking 75 ounces of water. You may have heard previously that you should drink 8 glasses of water a day, or drink a gallon of water a day, but that’s not quite right. It has to do more with your size, although size is not

You may have heard previously that you should drink 8 glasses of water a day, or drink a gallon of water a day, but that’s not quite right. It has to do more with your size, although size is not the only factor. If you’re more active or if you work outside, or so many other factors may come into play that would change your hydration needs – I can’t even begin to give specific guidelines.

As a general rule, aim to drink half your body weight in ounces. That’s water, by the way, not other beverages like soda or coffee. Those are

That’s water, by the way, not other beverages like soda or coffee. Those other drinks are actually diuretics and can cause you to be more dehydrated.

I hope this post was helpful to anyone who had that question or wondered about this before.
